VERDICT — CONFIRMED
The 193-member UN General Assembly on June 3, 2026 elected five non-permanent members to the Security Council for the 2027-2028 term, with the two-thirds threshold standing at 127 votes by secret ballot. The closely watched Western European and Others Group (WEOG) race saw Portugal (134 votes) and Austria (131) take the two seats, defeating Germany, which managed only 104 and was eliminated. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called the result 'a bitter defeat,' and reportedly attributed it to Russia campaigning against Berlin over its strong support for Ukraine, plus its Middle East posture.
The headline upset came in the Asia-Pacific contest: Kyrgyzstan won its first-ever Security Council seat, beating the Philippines across four ballots. Round one was inconclusive (Kyrgyzstan 105, Philippines 85, both short of 127); after three further restricted rounds Kyrgyzstan prevailed 142 (one report 143) to 49. Bishkek's permanent representative Aida Kasymalieva framed it as 'the completion of a long chapter of state-building'; FM Jeenbek Kulubayev led celebrations in the Hall.
The uncontested seats went to Zimbabwe (Africa, 182) and Trinidad and Tobago (Latin America-Caribbean, 181). The five new members take their seats on January 1, 2027, replacing Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia. The vote reshapes the elected bloc on the Council amid live files on Ukraine, the Middle East and the DRC.
