Jordan marks 80th Independence Day as King Abdullah confers royal medals, including honour for World Cup-bound football team

Jordan marked the 80th anniversary of its independence from the United Kingdom (25 May 1946) with ceremonies on 25 May 2026 led by King Abdullah II and Queen Rania at Al Husseiniya Palace, attended by almost the entire Hashemite family — Crown Prince Hussein and his wife Princess Rajwa, Prince Hashem, and Princess Salma, among other royals and senior officials. In his address to the nation, the King invoked national resilience and called for enhanced Arab coordination to address regional challenges and respect for 'good neighbourliness.' He bestowed a reported 15 royal medals on Jordanian institutions and individuals in recognition of contributions to the kingdom's progress.

Notable recipients of the Order of Al Istiqlal (Independence) of the First Degree included the men's national football team — honoured for qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history and for finishing runners-up at the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 — as well as the Al Aman Fund for the Future of Orphans, an initiative of Queen Rania, and the Association of Banks in Jordan. The National highlighted the family's symbolism and attire, including Queen Rania in a powder-blue gown with star motifs evoking the Jordanian flag and Princess Rajwa in a caped gown with gold Arabic calligraphy.

The anniversary functioned both as a statement of Hashemite continuity and a showcase of the next generation around Crown Prince Hussein.
